One particular person stands out in our memories: Mr. Harold Newman a perfect Gentleman in all aspects. He always had time to spend with the up and coming new exhibitors. His dogs were a credit to him, Harold was one of the old school and his dog's were always presented to perfection, we took our time, looked at different dog's and kennels and debated with the breeders such as Mrs Maggie Mullins, Mrs Vi Buchan, and Mr&Mrs Hunton Morgans as to what we wanted. This was over a two-year period, but we arrived back where we started at Tregwllym. Our opinion at the time and I may say without regret still is the home of the Welsh Springer Spaniel. They had as many as sixty Welsh at any one-time, the Paynes' were regarded more as stockmen in those days. Compared with the kennels today, breeders would struggle to afford the expense to run such an establishment, let alone put in the time and effort. Cliff explained one of his bitches was expecting a litter that weekend and "perhaps there may be something of interest to you in this litter". This is how we got started, a dog puppy by Jason of Tregwillym X Tregwillym Rachell Rose.
Success came at his first championship show Birmingham National, he gained best puppy in breed. Breed judge on the day Mrs Olga Hampton a gundog specialist. The puppy's name Brychan of Siams y Coed. We had several dogs that we showed under this prefix before going on to Cwrtafon. Both Kathy and I gained lots of experience with this puppy, and what's more, we had plenty of enjoyment watching him grow up.
The Jewel in the crown came in the 70's her name was Tregwillym Golden Charm a three year old bought from the
Paynes.
It is from this bitch we give thanks for the stock that we have at Cwrtafon today.
Cwrtafon Nia was our first Challenge
Certificate winner a sibling of Tregwillym Jolly Fella X Tregwillym Golden Charm. Nia's sweet looks and
adorable temperament produced Sh.Ch. Cwrtafon Poeth Goch winner of Nine CCs & six RCC's her litter brother
Cwrtafon Tap Coch winner of one CC & two RCC'S. We were now climbing the ladder of success, through the eighties,
nineties, and up to the present day Cwrtafon Welsh Springers Spaniels have some of the better blood lines in the U.K.
