Knowing your Welsh

The Welsh Springer is a breed that can be all things to all people, and perhaps the best way we can describe its character is to rely on our personal experiences. First thing to settle is the reason for owning a Welsh Springer.

Are you interested in Showing, working, or as a family companion? Then you have to decide what sex you require a dog or bitch. Some people have preferences. However, one must consider the fact that a bitch has seasons; this should not give any problems if managed in the right manner. The temperament without any doubt is the main reason for the breed's continuing popularity. His ability to please makes him an ideal candidate for training in the field. He is the most attractive of the spaniel breeds his distinctive striking appearance with red and white markings.

Welsh Springers have a gentle nature, they are thinkers, always ready to please. Although the kennels have been predominantly show kennels we were involved in the working section in the early days, also many of our stock have gone to working homes. The instinct is always there; all that one needs is the time and patience to train the youngster. A Welsh Springer loves life, he loves to be with the family, he will follow you around wherever you go, always ready to demonstrate his affection for you, especially when you return home. For this reason, it is not generally recommended for families with very young children, wait a little until they can cope and appreciate the puppy. Our son has grown up with our dogs, his friends were always frequent visitors, and his friends would know that where ever they went the dogs would follow, they would love to be included in what ever Darren and his friends were doing. They are always ready to demonstrate their affection; this is what makes him a wonderful companion.

Everybody likes a well-behaved dog; it is like teaching children manners. A good idea would be to look up your local canine club, or society, or even at your local veterinary surgery for puppy training classes.
